Out now: ELLE Decoration - Material Futures

Design-led innovations shaping the world of tomorrow – that’s what this special, English-language edition of ELLE Decoration NL is all about. As managing editor of this issue, I both wrote a big chunk of the content and coordinated a team of journalists, photographers and other talents.

Much of humanity’s future hinges on what things are made of and how they are produced. We need to rejuvenate existing resources, make sure processes are circular, be open-minded about what materials can be, and merge design with science and technology to create future-proof solutions. Reason enough to put the designers who are making a difference on a pedestal. Luckily, there are many inspiring examples: from 3D printed houses to mushroom-based furniture, from futuristic and fantastical AI invention to eco-friendly wonders from the sea. Of course, the spectacular photoshoots you’ll find in this edition were realised with sustainable, circular materials exclusively. Ever wondered what discarded denim can be used for? Or why certain materials give us ‘the ick’ while others are considered perfectly normal? Get this special issue of ELLE Decoration to find out!
